By JEFF INGLIS  |  June 21, 2006

The Portland Phoenix won two awards at last week’s convention of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Freelance reporter Lance Tapley won the first-place AltWeekly Award in the “news story-long form” category, for the 50,000-and-under circulation class. Tapley’s series, Torture in Maine’s Prison,” appeared in the Phoenix November 11 and 18, 2005.

Political columnist Al Diamon won an honorable mention for his political column, “Politics and Other Mistakes.” He took second place in that category in 2003.
