2013: The year that was

Twelve local media mavens pick the most notable quotes, facts, stats, and moments from another tumultuous year annum in Vo Dilun

It would be a pretty lame if I — the same guy who’s been blasting out emails to print, web, radio, and TV reporters across Rhode Island, asking them to fill out the  Phoenix ’s 2013 Year in Review Questionnaire — didn’t take a minute to fill out the thing myself. And so out of love for my own ideas and an overwhelming urge to boast about my recentwork. . . I mean, out of fairness to my fellow journalists brethren and sistren, I, too, have submitted answers to that questionnaire.

But a few quick notes before we begin:

1) Due to space limitations, what follows is a curated collection of year-in-review answers. For the full, unedited versions of all the questionnaires we received, head to our “Not For Nothing” blog at blog.thephoenix.com/blogs/notfornothing.

2) If you’re compelled to add your own 2013-themed thoughts, insights, memories, love letters, and Pagan curses, feel free to sound off in the comments on our website, or via Facebook (facebook.com/ProvidencePhoenix), Twitter (@provphoenix), and email (peil@phx.com). You’re welcome to use the questionnaire template we’ve provided, or to uncork a free-form rant.

3) Because we’re not so “alternative” that we don’t get a bit schmaltzy at year’s end, this is a good time to say how much we love you, Phoenix readers. We live to write stories for you because, among other things, we never have to dumb things down and you don’t storm away in a huff if we publish the word “shit.”

We had the chance to meet many of you in person at our 35th anniversary party at Lupo’s in November, and it was amazing. Thank you for coming. (If you missed it, picture ice sculptures, free booze from local breweries, a performance from AS220’s youth hip-hop crew, Buddy Cianci working the crowd, and a jam session featuring Big Nazo creatures and the Extraordinary Rendition Band at evening’s end.)

So, happy new year, friends. And, please, as this year rolls into the next, keep reading us, keep responding to us, and keep looking at our advertisements (yes, even the naughty ones). We’ll see you in 2014.

Let’s do some reminiscing, shall we?

NEWS ORGANIZATION  |Providence Phoenix

WHAT SUBJECTS AND/OR GEOGRAPHICAL TERRITORY DO YOU COVER?  I cover all of Rhode Island, with an emphasis on Providence (my hometown). Subject-wise, I generally write about anything but sports. But, actually, if it involves marathon tango dancing, lube wrestling at a strip club, or two guys on a mission to sail to every island in Narragansett Bay, I write about sports, too.
