Howie Carr, 3 pm–7 pm
Pro-Healey talking point: Mihos should drop out
The big event on Carr’s show is an interview with Mihos, in which Carr tries to browbeat his one-time good buddy into dropping out of the race. There’s an interesting back story here: Carr has admitted (in his Herald column) that he feels bad about beating up on Kerry Healey — “Muffy,” as he used to call her — for the past few years. Between Muffy’s bad press and his encouragement of Mihos, Carr inadvertently helped Patrick out; now he’s trying to undo the damage, or at least salve his guilty conscience.
The ensuing exchange could put a lasting pall on Carr and Mihos’s friendship. Carr tells Mihos he’s screwing the Healey campaign, paving the way for another Dukakis, and has horrible poll numbers. That he’s reacting hypocritically to the Romney administration’s new toll proposal, running a grudge campaign, polluting the airwaves with tasteless advertising, and is embarrassingly ignorant about the legislature. Understandably, Mihos gets pissed: “That is pathetic for you to say something like that,” he snaps when Carr says he’s become Patrick’s surrogate. At the close of the interview, Carr asks him one more time to drop out. Mihos declines.
A few minutes later, Carr moves on to gay sex, specifically the physical details of fellatio: State Senator Jarrett Barrios — who’s gay, and who led an ill-fated anti–Marshmallow Fluff crusade earlier this year — “doesn’t like young children ingesting that sticky white substance.” But further on in the show — before turning his attention to the war in Iraq — Carr hints that he’s finally given up on the Healey campaign. “Debate Kerry, or I say you’re chicken, Deval!” says a caller to Carr’s “Chump Line.” “Sticks and stones may break his bones, or the occasional empty soda can,” Carr responds. “But your words will never hurt him as he’s elected governor.”
If Kerry Healey’s lost Howie Carr, she’s screwed.
