Esserman, who started on the job in January 2003, notes that part of Boston’s previous success in reducing violence stemmed from an ambitious summer jobs program in which that city’s banks and law firms provided opportunities for young people.
At any rate, the chief says the department will remain focused on its four priorities: crime, fear, public order, and homeland defense in the time ahead. “We’re not here to rest on our laurels and to pat ourselves on the back,” says Esserman, whose background — including a Dartmouth-New York University School of Law pedigree — makes him an atypical chief, particularly in Providence. “We are constantly questioning what’s going on.”
