War anniversary events

To mark the anniversary of the start of the Iraq War (March 19, 2003) activists nationwide have scheduled vigils and peaceful protests for this Sunday. If you’d like to join them in a call for peace, check out these events scheduled around southern Maine:

Protest, Monument Square, Portland, 2 to 4 pm | Speakers include Dexter Kamilewicz, independent candidate for Congress (1st District) in 2006 and Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for US Senate in 2006 | Contact organizer Charles Morrison at chucklmorrison@hotmail.com for more.

Vigil, Casco Bay Bridge, Portland-South Portland, noon to 2 pm | Meet on the South Portland side of the bridge | Participants are encouraged to bring signs large enough for drivers to read (letters should measure three inches or longer) | For more information, e-mail jgrandbois@gwi.net | For info on other bridge vigils, check out www.peacebridges.org.

Vigil, Ocean View Cemetery wall, noon | Ocean View is located along Route 1 in Wells | Women in Black and United for Peace and Justice are organizing this vigil.

Reading, Monday, March 20, 7 pm, Portland Stage Company, 25a Forest Ave, Portland | What I Heard About Iraq, by Eliot Weinberger, adapted by Simon Levy | Part of a worldwide reading of this work.
