A few years back, the BeloJo would respond to such a powerful and finely reported feature by a rival media source by keeping mum for a week or two and then running their own story, pretending that no one had already beaten them like a scrambled egg. It's no secret that the hard times on Fountain Street — despite the continued presence of such talented reporters as Stanton and Gregg and Malachowski and Ziner and Lord, the mighty Tom Morgan, and a few others — have meant that the Urinal is regularly aced on a wide variety of local stories by much smaller entities like the Phoenix, the Newport Daily News, the Warwick Beacon, the Woonsocket Call, the Valley Breeze, and even the TV stations. We wait with great anticipation to see what Donnis and MacKay come up with for WRNI.
The dominance of the Other Paper is over and the signs are everywhere. And we can tell you that, despite the competitive instincts in all journalists, we've not heard from one who is not saddened by this state of affairs.
