A great view of equality

A GREAT VIEW OF EQUALITY

The April 22 hearing on marriage equality at the Augusta Civic Center was historic, important, and, on balance, a wonderful thing. Sadly, when the date for the hearing was changed on short notice, I had to miss it. When I returned home the following day, I asked more than a dozen participants for details. I was duly regaled with great stories.

But the Portland Phoenix piece "Play-By-Play: On the Front Lines at the Gay-Marriage Hearing" (May 1) really brought the event to life. Deirdre Fulton and Emily Parkhurst did a great job of catching highlights and quiet, candid moments, the mirth, camaraderie, and the anguish experienced by different folks engaged in this rare civic discussion. Attitudes on this issue have changed in a very positive direction in Maine. More people understand that gay marriage not only draws on our traditional instinct for tolerance but also can let us to share in a new spirit of celebration and joy. Your paper gave us a good look at one of the key turning points in this transformation. Many thanks.
