Wall Street's death wish

By PHILLIPE AND JORGE  |  September 9, 2009

Carrying the humorous title "The Friends of America Rally," Massey Energy was able to attract co-sponsors from the oil, gas, and coal companies in the region. Another sponsor was Verizon Wireless, who added to the zaniness thanks to their marketing campaign: "Go green with Verizon Wireless."

Massey CEO Don Blankenship explained to the crowd how "environmental extremists and corporate America" are trying to destroy their jobs and way of life because of this crazy notion about global warming. Blankenship, who regularly refers to environmentalists as "communists" and "atheists," told the press that the rally cost about $1 million.

Thank you, Massey and Verizon, for reminding us of the inherent patriotism of strip mining and air pollution and alerting us to such communist conspiracies as insistence on a clean environment.
