Judicial ups and downs

CORRECTION
A serious misquote of a public speaker appears in today’s print edition of The South County Independent. At the March 10 meeting of the South Kingstown Town Council and School Committee, resident Robert Hackey referred to decision-making of the “poobahs in Providence” in his speech to the two bodies. He did not say “goombas,” an ethnic slur for Italian Americans. A review of the meeting on the town’s Web site confirmed this. The Independent regrets the error.

MORE ‘BUTTERCUP’ EPHEMERA
Those who saw last week’s response from Brittany Ballantyne, the senior manager of the state wrestling champs, the Cumberland Clippers, vis-a-vis the team’s embrace of the late ’60s pop tune “Build Me Up Buttercup” may still be wondering about one thing. If it was not Cumberland natives Peter and Bobby Farrelly and their hit film There’s Something About Mary that brought the song to the attention of the team, where the hell did they hear it? It’s not a tune that one would expect your average 17- or 18-year-old to be familiar with (it was a hit for the Foundations in 1969).

Long-distance Casa Diablo correspondent and ink-stained wretch of note, Jim Clarke, the chief of bureau for the Associated Press in Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, has an idea. He writes that the great Bill Harley does a routine built around “Build Me Up Buttercup.” Jim tells us that Bill “came to our Unitarian church in Golden, Colorado, last year for a couple of shows. It was a hoot. He does about a 30-minute lecture just on that song, breaking it down, discussing music theory and teaching the crowd to sing it. One interesting fact about that song that sticks with me: It’s just about the only pop song around that starts on a high note and heads lower. Anyway, next time you run into Harley, tell him we remember his shows fondly. Ask about ‘Buttercup.’ ”

The likelihood that in the past decade some present-day Cumberland wrestlers attended a Bill Harley show is a strong possibility. Bill’s a homey (Seekonk) and, though he does shows all over the planet, he still does a fair number of gigs in the region. Anyone else have “Buttercup” info?
