His successor will need to perform from day one. The district has been without a voice in the Senate for months — important months, for both individual constituents in need of assistance in these tough times and for the broader interests at stake in budget discussions and legislation.
Any of the six Democrats vying for the seat have the potential to shine on Beacon Hill. A few are ready to step into the job immediately. They are all smart, progressive, and dedicated.
But Flaherty is savvy enough to understand how policy, the legislative process, and retail politics intersect. A “Triple Eagle” (sporting degrees from BC High, Boston College, and BC Law School) who cut his teeth trying major felonies for then–district attorney William Delahunt, Flaherty works hard and does his homework. We believe he will be an effective advocate for the district, and for progressive issues, in the State Senate.
