Ski Guide 2011: [Slideshow] Snow and ski art contest

Finalists from our annual illustration contest

Every year, students from Bob Maloney’s ‘Experimental Illustration’ class at MassArt take on the challenge and compete with each other for the Phoenix’s annual Ski /Snowboard cover.

Once again, all the contestants did a bang-up job. Ultimately, the winning illustration for the cover-art contest this year was by John McCabe. What made this our favorite? We especially liked the crisp outlines and the way the skier popped against that moody, blood-red sky.

Alternative universe

Everyone looks so weary in Howard Yezerski Gallery's gritty documentary photos of Boston's dear departed Combat Zone from 1969 to 1978. The year's still young, but this glimpse into our past from Roswell Angier, Jerry Berndt, and John Goodman may be one of the best shows of 2010.

Dr. Lakra is no more a real doctor than is Dr. Dre or Dr. Demento. The 38-year-old Mexican tattoo artist’s real name is Jerónimo López Ramírez. As for “lakra,” it means “delinquent.” Or so I thought.
