PAN AM | ABC | September 25 @ 10 pm | THE PLAYBOY CLUB | NBC | September 19 @ 10 pm | Apparently, AMC isn't the only network missing Mad Men these days — both ABC and NBC will debut shows that bear a superficial resemblance to it with Pan Am and The Playboy Club, respectively. Not sure why the big guns would invite comparisons to Mad Men that these shows can't possibly live up to, but, hey, it's not my money. Anyway, they're both set in the '60s, and they're both expected to be frothy, sex-filled romps. The former involves the titular airline; Christina Ricci stars as a stewardess. The latter concerns the title establishment, but expands its scope to include a murder mystery. Producers have been trying to get out in front of the inevitable controversy by hyping the show as being "empowering" to the Playboy bunnies it depicts.
