RIGHT, AND I THINK THE LAST TIME WE SPOKE YOU HAD JUST MOVED (BACK) OUT TO LA AND YOU WERE REALLY BUMMED THAT THEY DIDN’T HAVE DUNKIN' DONUTS OUT THERE. ARE YOU A CONVERT NOW?
Yeah, well, we’ve been here for 24 hours now, or maybe 40, and I’ve already had Dunkin' four times. So I’m getting my fill, and I’m going to stack as many donuts as I can in my suitcase so I can bring them back for my wife when we leave today.
WHAT ARE THE BIG COFFEE SHOPS OUT THERE? IS IT JUST STARBUCKS?
Yeah, and Coffee Bean, they’re the two big ones. And I just don’t like the process. You have to get to know them, you have to give them a name, you have to say a grande or a venti, and there are all these options. Soy this, whatever. And at Dunkin' Donuts you can just be like, “Give me a fucking coffee,” and they’re like, “Here’s your fucking coffee,” and then you leave. And it’s awesome.
SO I UNDERSTAND YOU’RE WORKING ON A THIRD INSTALLMENT OF THE HATCHET SERIES?
Yeah, Hatchet 3 started pre-production about a week ago. It will start filming at the end of April. I’m actually not directing this one, I’m just writing it and producing it. So I’m still extremely involved with the whole process, because it’s my baby, but two is really enough for me creatively as a director. And having a new director step in — the guy who’s directing was my camera operator on the first two Hatchet. He shot everything from like Tom Cruise movies to Rob Zombie movies to my movies — so he’s always wanted to direct and this was his first chance. And to have somebody who’s that excited, it feels like the first movie again. It’s all the same crew, but now there’s a director that’s so excited to be there, this is like the greatest thing that’s ever happened to him, it’s really renewed everybody. And that’s sort of what I wanted to happen. I didn’t want it to become, you know, now we’re going to make another one, and another one. Because it gets stale.
RIGHT, THEY SORT OF GET DILUTED AFTER THE SECOND OR THIRD IN A SERIES, USUALLY.
Yeah, and that’s what happens with a lot of horror franchises. They just keep making them because they’re doing well. And it’s great that Hatchet 2 did so well, and that we’re doing another one, but I’d love for this to be the one slasher franchise that people say at least got to part 5 before it totally sucked. [Laughs.]
WELL, GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING, I HOPE YOU GUYS GET PICKED UP FOR THE SECOND SEASON.
Thanks, I think the only thing I’d like to add is that if people want to see the show, and they don’t have FEARnet, they can just call their cable provider and ask. They will add it if enough people call. So we’ll also be available on iTunes and DVD and Blu-ray and everything, eventually, but for now it’s only on FEARnet. So if you don’t have it you can ask.
