AUDIENCE MEMBER In regard to tonight's discussion, what can be done when a team reaches a sustained level of success in a small market, such as Tampa Bay has the past few years, and still can't draw a crowd of any sort — or when a team like the Marlins wins the World Series and then has to dismantle the entire team because of a lack of funds and interest in the team?
GAMMONS It's one of the biggest problems that the game faces, and Tampa Bay's a great example because it's gonna get more difficult for Tampa Bay because they're not gonna be able to have the high draft choices. I know the commissioner talks about it a lot and he really doesn't see where it's going. I mean, I don't see Cleveland drawing one-and-a-half million fans, and if they don't draw one-and-a-half million fans, I don't know how they're going to survive. Kansas City's got great, young talent but their window of opportunity is terribly narrow in that division with Detroit. Believe me, nobody in the Commissioner's Office or among ownership has any idea what's gonna happen to them. ^
