TMYLM’s biggest problem is that its characters and their issues are just not that interesting — unless watching whiny white, heterosexual, middle-class people having lousy sex is your idea of a turn-on. The renewal of TMYLM, despite a flood of negative viewer comments on HBO’s Web forum, does not bode well for the network that gave us The Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, and Big Love. All of those provocative and accomplished dramas deal assuredly with sexuality and male-female relationships, placing them as mouth-watering courses within a rich storytelling feast. But TMYLM has no grander story to tell; the sex is the main course, and what a bland missionary’s supper it is. How did HBO let AMC’s Mad Men, the best drama of the year, slip by while giving the green light to this?
