9. Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness is disappointing (June 2003)

While the faux-testosterone algorithm that is Maximdeemed Angel of Darkness perfect ("The basic game hasn’t changed from the 'run, jiggle, shoot' style we know and love, ensuring Lara will be every bit the guilty pleasure she’s always been"), the rest of the world issued a deeply dissatisfied collective "oof" on this one. Up to that point, the Tomb Raider series had proven itself a true juggernaut, bushwhacking a singular, spectacular trail in the untamed wilderness of 3-D action-adventure games -- and for it to flop its first swan dive onto the next-generation PS2 (three years after the console's launch, no less) was a stunning act of underwhelmment.
