GREAT SCOTT

Date(s): Thursday, August 30, 2007
Miss Fairchild, Certified Bananas, DJ Ammon EP

FUNK
When he’s not destroying parties as half of the CERTIFIED BANANAS crew, Samuel P. Nice mans the decks for the Providence party-funk trio MISS FAIRCHILD, alongside this little dude who sings like Prince and this big dude who plays the flute. Trust us, it’s genius. To celebrate the release of their new Ooh La La, Sha Sha, they’re in “Miss Fairchild Show” mode — bolstered by bassist Trick Johnson and drummer Todd “The Rocket” Richard — and joined by the aforementioned Bananas and DJ AMMON EP at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston | 617.734.4502.

The Lowdown
Great Scott’s décor is, in a word, random. International flags suspended from the ceiling, glossy posters of Doug Flutie on the back wall, and not one but two Elvis busts peering down from a high mantle. Live college/prog rock nightly beginning between 9 and 10 pm. No food, cash only. Open daily from noon-2 am. $9 cover after 9 pm. FRI The Pill, with DJ Ken spinning British and American new-wave and indie. SAT The Plan, with DJs Carl and Victoria spinning indie rock.

Bar Type: Full Bar

Best Dance Night
Since its inception almost 10 years ago (!), the Pill (now at Great Scott) has been the place to be if you’re an Anglophile and it’s Friday night. Resident DJs Ken Powers and Terence Pratt spin “Britpop, modern indie, and the occasional spout of new wave, ’60s and synthpop,” as their MySpace page puts it, and feature a like-minded live act — the Information, the Bon Savants, Protokoll, etc. — every week. www.thepillboston.com

Best Club For Rock
By now you know the story: arty Allstonians overtake yah-dude, frat-boy watering hole; magically transform it into one of the city’s premier venues for underground music; inspire “Allston Rock City” headlines in every local paper and magazine; and everyone lives happily ever after. But every now and then, it’s nice to step back and reflect on how quickly — and completely — Great Scott has made that metamorphosis. Pretty killer.

Best Bar
For the first time in our readers’ poll, Great Scott takes the best-bar category. And we’ll wager the reason it didn’t win before was that it embodied all the worst in Allston frattitude. No longer. The cave-like space now draws folks with perfectly imperfect hair and those tiny alterna-bods for “The Pill,” “The Plan,” “Blackout Bar,” and the rest of the nights.
