Targeting Borges

This posting should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the sentiment but Boston Sports Media Watch has posted a manifesto calling for the firing of Globe sports writer Ron Borges, who has infuriated many local sports fans with his Patriots coverage. (That, in and of itself, is no sin.)

Leaving nothing to chance, the manifesto includes a form email and an email list of interested parties to send it to. I would conservatively estimate that I've received about 40-50 copies of that email -- or emails with similar sentiments -- so far today. I wish I had saved the one email defending Borges's rights, but it fell victim to my very active delete key.

Damned shame the Globe cannot unleash a horde of reporters in search of real news on the streets of Boston in numbers similar to the sports dept.

Mark,

Let me throw a hypothetical at you:

1. Suppose a White House bureau writer physically assualted another writer who was elderly and walked with a cane.

Would you blindly defend this reporter? Because Borges that's what Borges did to a reporter from Newsday.

The people who started the internet campaign don't help their cause with their fanboy whining, but when you get past the fact they don't like the fact Borges doesn't like the Patriots, there are some pretty serious journalistic sins alleged in there. I'm only commenting on the time he beat up a cripple because if you go on google this one is well-documented.

Are the likes of Borges and Shaughnessy and Dupont and the rest paid to have an opinion? Yes they are. Go ahead, keep defending their right to behave like trite, tired one-trick ponies. They do have that right in America. Then everyone can scratch their heads and wonder why the Globe sports department's reputation has gone straight down the toilet.

Anyway, I'm going to ask this one more time and put it all in caps so it stands out and strips away all the clutter:

MARK, DO YOU REALLY THINK IT IS OK FOR A REPORTER TO PHYSICALLY ASSAULT ANOTHER REPORTER DURING A PRESS CONFERENCE, AND ONE WHO IS ELDERLY AND NEARLY HANDICAPPED TO BOOT?

As I've noted elsewhere, I don't think Mark was saying he thought the BSMW letter was the wrong thing to do, or that he was endorsing Borges.

The tenor of his posts indicate that Jurkowitz brushes aside this recounting of Borges's lapses as a journalist and a human being as nothing more than homerism run wild due to Ron's constant critique of the Patriots organization.

For the 10 millionth time, the issue isn't Borges's actual viewpoint, its the fact that his stated personal animosity towards the Patriots' head coach has to make an intelligent reader question whether his opinions on football (the team, an upcoming game, etc.)are actually based on his football knowledge, or based on his animosity. The mere existence of this question (a question which Borges himself has fostered, given his radio comments), calls Borges's suitabiltiyt o cover the team into question.

Mark...If we hear you on the radio saying how much you think Marty Baron is a scumbag (I'm not saying he is or that you said that), and then we start reading you criticising the Globe in this space, wouldn't it be reasonable for us to wonder whether the criticism is legit? I dont expect some of the trolls posting here (jealous of WEEI "personalities"?? bwahahahaha) understand, but I would expect you to get the difference between what the BSMW piece was saying and "they dont like him because of his opinions."
