Oprah Says No

I received a good amount of feeback after last week's story, "Attack of the 50-foot Oprah," made the case that the multi-media queen of feelgood has amassed too much power for everyone's good. Not surprisingly, several folks suggested that such a story might have been motivated by underlying racism and sexism -- which is unfortunate.

So in the interests of a self-serving follow-up, this piece in the San Diego Union-Tribune describes how Oprah stiffed a bunch of high school kids -- and student journalists -- during a visit to San Diego High School. Bill Gates was equally inaccessible, but unlike the much beloved Oprah, Gates --even with all his philanthropy --  is considered a goofy geek and/or a robber baron by a huge chunk of America.

What's wrong with you Mark, today?

You get on Rita's case, then on Walter's case then draw a parallel between Oprah and Gates?

What are you thinking?

I know your entourage is a big Mac fandom gathering but you have to admit that PC's are used by the world a lot more and are useful TO the world a lot more than Macs ever have or will.

WHat's the Mac's most distinct contribution to the Tech world? Finding Nemo?

For God's sake. Let's be fair here. Microsoft is just another self-serving company with a very good but dominant product. If you had the same sought-after product the public all over the world craves, you'd behave the same or almost, Mark.

They go overboard sometimes, but the fact is many people's documents are transportable between so many computers in the world makes for an easier business environment, more compatible if you will.

So never mind the extemist geeks who live in their mother's basements.

And to your more insulting slight, comparing Oprah and Bill. I am no particular fan of Bill. I don't think of him as evil but definitely flawed, like the rest of us.

But I have not seen a more generous wealthy man in the American business landscape in a long long time. He is a sincere benefactor and gives by the billions. His non-profit endowment is worth something like 50 billion and has made a clear mark on some health issues in Africa and Asia and gave to countless schools. The best since the legendary ones like Carnegie Mellon and such.

What has Jobs done except try to hold on to his money and buy other multi billion companies (like Disney) to try to accrue his wealth to finally compete in the World's Top Three wealthiest men? What an ego trip he is.

And Oprah gets all this PR credit for doing sooooooooo little with Charity. She was rated near the bottom in terms of percentage of money given away to money earned, and to money in the bank. She is a miser. And she is giving us this song and dance about going to Africa and helping. She is full of it and a self-serving PR hog.

Why isn't she a more focused benefactor with some neglected African-American communities first and try to pluck some out of their delusions, misery and violence and show them a better example. Work upclose with them and give some money but spend it the right way. It takes less money than the presence and inspiration of a successful likeable Black personality. Landing a hand on a closer face to face basis can go longer than money can in some of these violent neighboorhood. She could start with just a couple of miles away from her Chicago Penthouse and get to work in some of Chicago's ghettos.

Come on, Mark. What's going on here? What happened to knowing the facts and being fair and no-nonsensical?

I wouldn't normally care how much a rich person gives. It is his or hers freedom whether to give at all, how much to give or to whom. It is not compulsory. It is nice and out of moral duty that you'd give. But Oprah assails us with all this wishywashy useless sappy crap and she makes herself out to be a Mother Teresa.

BS.

This is a great link that puts everyone in perspective. And if you want to see where I am coming from, look at someone like Ted Truner and compare the devotion in giving and readiness to part with money.

Charity navigator pegs her Angel Network at 14 Mill. SHe is worth $1.5 billion today. Look on the link how much Ted gave and how much he is worth. ( Hint: he is worth about the same today than she is but he gave well over a Billion)

The Walton's giving record is even more miserable. Their contributions is a tiny percentage of their worth. And they are still milking. Those are the evil business families that put the American Economy off track and are greedy bastards.

Not Bill Gates. We need another Bill gates to renergize our Tech sector that is migrating east.

I'm not even sure who exactly is the person who wrote this-but talk about petty, undermining, punk-ass-bitch.

Pleeease, it's people like you who 'truly' have the problem. Check this out-Where is your billion/s-how much are YOU giving to charity??? Oh that's right-you're not a billionaire. You haven't done what it took-such as the people you talk about.
It's so easy to sit on the sidelines and judge and criticize others who are making the most-with what they have. They earned to be where they are. Talk about sour-grapes.
It's soooo easy for small people to underhand the efforts of those who are 'larger.'

The person who wrote this criticizes a person such as Oprah-saying she hasn't given much to charity in comparison to other billionaires.

First of all-you're a jack-ass. Second of all, Oh yeah-Oprah has had several organizations for charity for well over six years now. Angle network, her work and charity concerning child molestors. Her donation with Katrina of 10,000,000 dollars, and '93 bill helping police track and capture sexual offenders.
Not to mention Bill Gates was worth 90 billion dollars before being sued-but even after, he is worth approx. 50 billion in 2006.

Oprah is worth 1.5 billion. Although very rich-that is a HUGE difference.

Talk about nay-sayer. Compare how much 'YOU'VE' given to Charity. It's so easy to put the spotlight on someone who is already in the limelight and under a magnify-glass of societal attention and judgement.
People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

It's people like YOU that spend an overly, irregular amount of their time just sh*itting on everyone else that are actually risking themselves and their image by 'putting themselves' out there. 'DOING SOMETHING!'
A very 'small' person indeed.

Get a life-how about talking about what people ARE doing. Or-rather, getting out and putting as much effort you put in talking negatively about others and their 'lack of deeds,' and put it to good use-such as 'doing-something,' rather than complaining about everyone else. If you're so 'concerned' with doing great deeds for charity-put your money where your mouth is.

Go earn a couple billion-then give most of it to charity. Dumb-ass.
