Media Log - You Go, Ron

You Go, Ron

While the anti-Borges emails just keep on comin', I  just got one from a Borges supporter. I am posting it, but omitting his name in the interests of humanity and safety.

To all concerned:
Today's unwarranted internet attack on one of the Globe's finest writers is equal parts juvenile and based on jealousy. I urge you to ignore it. Newspapers very badly need writers with both skill and independent thinking and Mr. Borges has both in abundance.

Obviously this person, (Nor Jurkowitz, it would seem) has actually read the column.

For someone to claim that piece is anti-Borges just because he doesn't suck up to the Patriots is ludicrous. It's about his conduct.

It has nothing to do with "independent thinking". It has to do with a hatred towards Belichick that is dragging the name of the Boston Globe into the mud. When Borges goes on radio stations and makes those statements and accusations, he is introduced as "Ron Borges of the Boston Globe".

This embarassment needs to end.

I harbor no illusions that Borges will actually be fired. I simply hope he gets reigned in a bit and not be allowed to make these cloudy accusations and snide personal remarks on the airwaves.

Sadly, it seems that Mark is circling the wagons for one of his own by posting only a pro-Borges email. But the media tends to protect its own, so be it.

Fortunately, the email he posted was from an eleven year old child. I know this because the email lacks facts, details, specifics, or any counter-arguement whatever. I'm wondering if the email came with swirly hearts and smiley faces.

What the emailer (and Mark) refuse to face is that the desire to get rid of Borges as a football writer for the Boston Globe is based on specific unethical behavior on Borges part combined with his demonstrated and well-detailed lack of knowledge about how modern football is played, managed and coached.

Take one incident among many: There is no skill or independent thinking when Borges goes on local radio and purposely lies about what Tedy Bruschi said about his contract. There is nothing "professional" about a reporter that goes on radio and relates to the listeners the contents of an "off the record" conversation. Those actions are unethical.

Rather, what Mr. Borges has in "abundance" is a personal grudge against Belichick that he allows to influence his writing about the coach's abilities, even as the Globe Sports editors tell us they have one of the best sports sections in the country.... Ha!

And how can I let pass the wonderful irony of Mr. Jurkowitz posting on his blog (the primary purpose of which is to lecture professional journalists) an email that states that "blogs have no business lecturing professional journalists"!

The only question that remains to be asked is, "When did the Boston Globe begin hiring eleven year olds to do its dirty work online?"

My favorite part is where the email suggests that "professional" journalists are above criticism... apparently no one has a right to have an opinion and express that opinion about anyone who writes for a newspaper or any other form of media, apparently.

Good point, Mr. Mendoza,

I wonder if the emailer and Mr. Jurkowitz would agree with the following statement:

"Editorial writers with access to a newspaper have no business lecturing a professional politician."

Obviously the frauds at Bruce Allen's pathetic website think that they have lives...Obviously they don't.

When they stop sucking up to anyone that gives them free publicity and that includes this blog...I might care. But until than they'll link, obsess, and try to get their pathetic name and cause listed on any website possible and whine about the people that have the jobs they actually want. They should go back into their mother's basements and save up some money for a new Star Wars doll and leave the sports, and the sports journalism to the professionals.

See that, I'll bet you they'll point out all of my spelling mistakes because I disagree with them. That's what these scumbags do. Of course they'll duck the claims that they rarely rip into Tom Curran and Dale Arnold because they give the site publicity. And they'll duck claims that they are biased based on donations and the fact that they'd suck up to Borges if he kept their pathetic little site running.

What an embarrassment. I cannot believe that anyone would want Borges fired because they believe he has some sort of irrational bias against Bill Belichick. And what's your proof? Cherry-picked quotes from linked articles and transcripts with no links to back to check their veracity.

How am I supposed to know those radio quotes are what Borges actually said? You provide no context via an official transcript or link to a recording you made. I'm supposed to take your word at face value? Bang up job with your "reporting," pal.

And the articles you linked undercut your point. In the Borges piece you quoted on debunking genius, Borges quoted Belichick's father and then, in the fourth graf, called Bill a "gifted and talented coach." What's the problem here?

Oh wait, I already know: Borges doesn't genuflect like a fan. He keeps a skeptic's eye when covering his beat. He doesn't get too close to his sources and subjects, so he can offer criticism, which is his job as a reporter and columnist. It's hard to report when you're on your knees, although you do make a good effort every day, Bruce.

Borges may be overly pessimistic, but you know that walking in. That he doesn't declare his fealty to Belichick or the Patriots is not a black mark on his jacket, it's a point of pride. I understand that about him, and read him with that grain of salt. I disagree with almost everything the guy writes, but his perceptive challenges my assumptions about the team. What more do you want from a newspaper?

He should be a better person because you say so? Borges is a gruff, cantankerous guy who gets into fights and uses flamethrower language on the radio. Yawn. I don't want to get a beer with the man; I just want a different perspective on my football team. When I want to rah-rah unthinkingly like you, Pete Sheppard and Freddie Smerlas, I'll look you up. Sheep are generally not hard to find.

In the end, you wrote a hateful screed with shaky facts and unprovable quotes to show that Borges has a personal vendetta against the Patriots and Belichick. Forgive me while I laugh at the irony.

Oh they rip on Sheppard too

The only guys they like are Dale Arnold and Tom Curran. One throws there name out twice a day and the other is a member. It is like they have this top secret exclusive club and show a massive bias to them.

Dawgs!

Please note that Stevey Buckethead provides no rebuttal at all to the facts about Borges' unethical behavior.... although he is happy to take unsubstantiated shots at those who mention the ethical lapses - shoot the messenger, perhaps?

And as for Berto... what a joke. "Borges doesn't get close to his sources"????... ha! Umm, how about Ruiz, Bledsoe, and Don King just to start!! And as for "unprovable quotes", have you ever heard of a little new technology called "a recording device"? Perhaps you haven't heard of it but it can take sound waves from radio stations and actually record them so you can listen to them over and over and over. It really is remarkable, you should try using one sometime because, in this case, it proves beyond all doubt the Borges dislikes Belichick ... THAT is not a debatable point. I DARE you to prove otherwise.

So, again, even though all the Borges suckups show up here, not a single one has defended him regarding his unethical behavior. Is it because you wish not to partake in a losing cause?

"Hero-worshipping fans who happpen to have blogs have no business lecturing professional journalists."

Does this mean no one in the media has the right to call for the firing of a coach?

Incidentally, the article has MULTPILE sources to read some of his drivel and see just how little he seems to actually know about the game.

I just want a guy who reports fairly and unbiased information. A guy who has fully admitted disliking the person he covers just flat out can NOT be a fair reporter.

Mikey

Bruce Allen and his minions who started this admit a vast dislike for all things Ron Borges...and Pete Prisco...and Nick Cafardo...and anyone that isn't Dale Arnold and Tom E. Curran...The idiot who gives them credit and the idiot who's actually a member of their site.

You know what..IT JUST KILLS THEM THAT ORDWAY and Company have the NUMBER ONE SHOW IN THE WORLD OF SPORTS TALK RADIO..and they can't do ANYTHING ABOUT IT except root for Ordway and Sheppard to die of heartattacks.

I think Borges is still one of the finest boxing writers going- Bruce Allen had a piece last year about how at least 1 member of the Globe's sports reporters/columnists seem to have some sort of antipathy with the teams they cover/ followers of those teams- Borges- Patriots, Peter May- Celtics, Dan Shaughnessy- Red Sox and Kevin Dupont- Bruins

So unless the article links to the actual radio quotes they didn't happen? Is that how it works Berto? How do you explain away the quotes in newspapers every single day or on espn.com or other places? Do they have audio files for every quote? How do you know they happened? Because they were recorded.

As far as expecting something "different" from your newspaper, that's your right. I expect newspapers to provide accurate and correct facts. Borges fails miserably in this simple task. Coupled with the fact that he is completely unprofessional and gets into physical altercations while on the clock for his employer, I'd say it's pretty fair to question his acumen. If you had actually read the piece, it's not the fact that Borges has an opinion which is the problem. I guess that's too simple of a point for many to grasp.

What one should do when they encounter a blogger like those on Boston Sports Media Watch

1 - Challenge them to a face to face meeting...As Pete Sheppard says, "They'll say they hate you over the phone but then they'll run into you and it's 'I love you Pete'" This also is true for the internet geeks

2 - Mock the fact that you get paid and they don't. After all the net geeks are really upset that this is their dream and your doing it.

3 - Say you were at a party with someone famous, can get into Heff's House, played golf with Flutie, etc. Fantasy Camp things you guys get that these idiots want. Laugh at them and their pathetic lives at their pathetic cubicles...Laugh some more.

4 - Ask them to try and get a job in the field. It's not easy....That's pretty clear. Then tell them to try doing it after burning down all the bridges they've burnt down by ripping every member in the field over the last few years.

And finally why everyone should laugh at the bloggers like Boston Sports Media Watch

1 - In a few weeks people like Pete Sheppard and Glen Ordway will broadcast live from media row at Super Bowl XL in Detroit and they won't.

2 - Pete Sheppard and Glen Ordway were ON THE FIELD after the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals to win the 2004 World Series

Also on the field during the Postgame

- Kelly Barons
- Jimmy Fallon
- Greg Dickerson
- Bill Burt
- Jeannie Zelasko

According to them, Barons was only there because she gave Dr. Charles head, Fallon has no talent, Dickerson wears more makeup than Liza Minelli, Burt is a clueless loser, and Zelasko a blonde blimbo. Of course they all are far more qualified, or at least FEEL that way. Just another example of the bitter throwing stones for others who are actually accomplishing what they want to do in life.

3 - In a few weeks Steve Silva of Boston Dirt Dogs will head down to Spring Training and actually file reports for BOSTON.COM. A website with an actual purpose in the world of Sports Media. Meanwhile Pats67 will cry out that Dennis and Callahan's Manny Ramirez Spring Traning coverage is unwarranted thinking they know something about what the people really want to listen too. Obviously they haven't seen the ratings books lately.

4 - Despite a recent email attack to get Ron Borges fired, Ron Borges not only has his job but has a job writing for MSNBC and is still on the Patriots Pre and Post Game Shows. Throw some drive time on ESPN Radio's Drive Time with Michael Felger and Borges is laughing all the way to the bank. Even Felger who would go toe to toe with Borges on Channel 4's Sports Final in the past came to Felger's defense telling the web geeks to "get a grip".

5 - After that failed attack the webgeeks on the Boston Sports Media Website went back to calling it's critics "chicken$%#%ers" and mocking Glen Ordway on the day when WEEI announced the highest ratings they've ever gotten in the history of the station.

6 - Even in the failed media coupe Allen and the BSMWers couldn't even get the support of the ultra liberal Boston Phoenix Media Blog. If you can't win the freebie paper that's endorsed by the Commies, you ain't winning any battles with the big boys.

7 - Bruce Allen and his Internet Geeks trash sports caller personallities like Al From Everett and Frank from Gloucester for being suck up's and pathetic get a lifers. Man it really takes one to know one doesn't it. The only difference is that Al From Everett owns a successful Boston buisness that benefits from his time on air and that Frank is the most popular man at WEEI events, even moreso than the hosts themselves. The fact that he's about 80, retired and his life consists of calling into sports talk radio and going to strip clibs, I believe that it's pretty damn clear that this is the life the low life pathetic net geeks only dream about.

8 - Allen actually believes he's unbiased completely supporting the Dale Arnold Show while completely ignoring the fact that he's getting a paycheck directly from the Boston Bruins organization. Notice how the man refuses to blame Sinden, O'Connell and Jacobs for the teams problems instead focusing directly on Hal Gill and Pete Sheppard. When it comes to hockey, yes...Pete Sheppard is right on the money when it comes to being objectionable. Which is hard for those at Allen's Sports Media Site to believe because they all think he's a moron.

9 - It's not like Curt Schlling is offering opinions and seeking advice on the site. He does that on Sons of Sam Horn. Bruce Allen is still very upset that Schilling and John W. Henry converse on these sites and still they aren't given credibility as a sports source. "But if you go to one forum, you have to do them all" says Allen crying like a little baby that just wet his Pampers. He still hasn't gotten over that fact, never has and never will. That isn't to say that the folks on Sons of Sam Horn have credibility as they flat out refuse to knock Schilling for anything since the day they lured him to Boston. Still though, that site unlike Allen's made a difference and he can't get over it.
