Big awards going to Maine chefs has also become a trend, with Hugo's Rob Evans well-deserved Beard award this year, Sam Hayward's Beard award a few years back for his work at Fore Street, and Steve Corry's Food and Wine award for Five Fifty-Five. Primo's chef Kelly is Maine's original Beard winner. She won in 1999 at her previous restaurant in upstate New York, and promptly packed up and moved to Rockland. Let's hope Evans stays put in the wake of his accolades. Primo is a splurge, it's true. But if we are following "staycation" trends and sticking to Maine this summer, Primo allows us to appreciate the best of what is here — which is worth splurging on at least once a summer.

As a sign of difficult economic times, a turnover in cafés is a noisy indicator but a significant one.

Anyone who grew up in a Jewish family likely shares two characteristics: a hearty appetite and a natural affinity for smoked fish.
- Jade Garden Seafood Restaurant
Ready for some reasonably priced lobster after years of paying too much? You’re in luck, since a price war seems to be unfolding on the streets of Chinatown, with various window signs advertising twin lobsters in ginger and scallion for as low as $14.95.
- The Snack Bar and O Senhor Ramos
Despite frequenting East Cambridge, I’m abashed to admit I overlooked the Snack Bar for years.
- In the raw
The new GRO Café offers a vegan menu on which (almost) nothing has been heated beyond 112 degrees. This is supposed to preserve something raw-foodists call "living enzymes," which they imagine to be important to our health. Technically that is nonsense.
- Where's the beef?
“Beef: it’s what’s for dinner,” say the cattle lobby’s TV ads, and I sigh in agreement.
- East Side Bar and Grille
Back in the day, a certain brand of bar-restaurant served Greater Boston neighborhoods well with plentiful food: fried seafood, steaks and chops, and usually some Italian-American dishes.

It's important to know your amateur online reviewers. While some are reliable cheap-eats dowsers, a rave from a Chowhound who also adores the Cheesecake Factory loses some credibility.
- Townsend's
It’s south of Cleary Square, which is similar to what Davis Square was like 20 years ago, a world of mom-and-pop stores leavened with immigrants that now seems as remote.
