Ugly Portland

By SARA DONNELLY  |  July 26, 2006

Stand on the prom and look down the hill to the heinous Union Station Mini-Mall on St. John Street, Portland’s most iconic example of hideous urban renewal. You’ve survived the smell of progress, the sharp angles of development, and the toasted tarmac of a car-lover’s paradise. And, in the end, what have you learned? Maybe all you know is that ugliness happens, even in the prettiest place.
