Review: Whip It

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut falls flat

Add a dash of the sad beauty contests and kooky, dysfunctional family of Little Miss Sunshine to a helping of the bogus hipness and overexposed star of Juno and whip it good and you get an idea of why Drew Barrymore's directorial debut falls flat as a sappy soufflé. Ex-Juno waif Ellen Page plays Bliss Cavendar, a misfit small-town teen brow-beaten by her basilisk mom (Marcia Gay Harden, needless to say), Brooke, into futile participation in beauty contests.

Timid Bliss rebels, not via pregnancy and hamburger phones, but by joining a roller-derby team and knocking heads with a cast of roughnecks who include Juliette Lewis, Kristen Wiig, and Barrymore herself. Any chance this is going to hinge on the simultaneous scheduling of the championship match and the big beauty contest?

The roller-derby action is as listless as the comic back-and-forth and the smarmy sentiment, but Barrymore at least proves she's no more mediocre than anyone else at directing such pap.

Re: Review: Whip It
In a world where abject and brutal truth is practiced and accepted, a loving and kind lie turns everything and everyone around...generating more untruths.

This is a different brand of humor where unkind and cruel thoughts and opinions are expected, so sometimes you find yourself laughing at things that normally would repulse you.  In the midst of all this, the nice, not-so-great-looking guy is trying to get the out-of-this-world-great looking girl.

The audience was laughing out loud throught the movie, our attention never waned, and, in the end, they even applauded.  I would pay to see this movie which was filmed in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Oh, a treat, all the great stars of comedy today make cameo appearances that are hilarious.

John Hillcoat doesn't stray from Cormac McCarthy's Road For those who found the Coen Brothers' adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men too lighthearted, John Hillcoat's relentlessly faithful version of the author's post-apocalyptic Pulitzer-winning novel might hit the spot.

In The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Wes Anderson excelled at telling adult stories with childlike whimsy. Telling children’s stories with adult whimsy is another matter.

Only Hunter S. Thompson could come up with a line like that; no one else had his knack for the near-Biblical proverb. Few writers outside of Madison Avenue or the New Testament can sum up a zeitgeist so cannily in a phrase.
