Anyone surveying the compositional dime turns and Matsuzaki’s willfully simple and eclectic lyrics might find a key to Deerhoof’s work in Offend Maggie’s cover. They have a tradition of artist-designed cover art; this time out, they chose Tomoo Gokita, whose paintings they admired when they played at an art fair last year. Matsuzaki: “His art is always monochrome and super-realistic, almost grotesque. Then parts of them are often missing.” Indeed, the muscle-bound man on Offend Maggie’s cover is faceless. “It’s more hopeful and positive to leave a space for audiences and viewers. They can think of their own stories.”
