• Those of you pining away for TONY MCNABOE's solo work should be pleased he's set up a residency at the Big Easy for the month of February, playing each Tuesday with a soul band featuring MIKE TAYLOR and GIMETTI of the ROYAL HAMMER, fellow Overtone NIGEL HALL, KENYA HALL, MEGAN JO WILSON, and everyone's bassist, STU MAHAN. He's bringing some great openers, too, including a February 10 appearance from the CAMBIATA's CHRIS MOULTON and a February 24 set with DAVE GUTTER performing his solo material. All of this is a build-up to the March 10 release of McNaboe's new solo record, The Cost of Living.
• Rootsy popsters the LOMAX will release their debut album, The Lomax Album, on February 20 with a gig at the Empire. KING MEMPHIS help them celebrate, which means DAVE RAGSDALE will be drummer first for KM, and guitarist and singer second for the Lomax. Does that mean he gets four drinks on the house instead of two?
• Don't forget about the RPM CHALLENGE, which started February 1 and demands that you write and record an entire album before the March 1 deadline. The thing has become a sensation, with more than 1300 bands and solo artists already signed up, and five additional regional hubs added to supplement The Wire's Portsmouth HQ.. Get all the details at www.rpmchallenge.com. Just do it.
