For now, cruising toward Chicago in a Sprinter borrowed from the Dead Trees (who supply part of the six-person touring band — no Moretti owing to Strokey obligations), Shapiro delights in the van's spacious luxury, the high spirits among her bandmates, and the gratifying feeling that comes when good music leads the way. And she seems just as pleased to plunge forward as she might be to idle on the 5 as the sunset cuts the smog.
"When you find friends like this, who think like you and who you can work with, it's very rare," she says. "This kind of thing usually only happens when you're a kid."

My lingering qualms with Devendra Banhart's new album have very little to do with its substance and more to do with its consistency, a quality that throughout What Will We Be? seems present only in its glaring absence.
