Dudley’s back is intact
In his December 15, 2006, column (“Scary Guy”), Al Diamon claims that Ethan Strimling is not liked by many in Democratic circles for reasons including, “He’s accused of stabbing a few of his fellow Dems, including party chair Ben Dudley, in the back.”
While politics is a contact sport, we punch-drunk politicos still manage to remember slights as large as one that may be characterized as a backstabbing. Had Mr. Diamon contacted me before going to print, I would have set the record straight: there are no knives in my back.
Ethan and I are colleagues and friends. We’ve known each other for more than 12 years, since we worked together for former congressman Tom Andrews. There are times that the State Legislature seems to breed discord and hard feelings; however, Ethan and I have always managed to work through disagreement with professionalism and mutual respect.
While I maintain neutrality in the much-rumored Democratic primary contest for Maine’s 1st Congressional District (there are several excellent potential candidates), my friendship and respect for Ethan stands.

Former congressman David Emery’s correct in thinking that public campaign financing is a luxury the state can’t afford, but his aversion to Clean Election money seems to be more a matter of convenience than conviction.
- This could be a possibility
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column about Democratic state Senator Ethan Strimling of Portland and his plans to run for the 1st Congressional District seat in 2008 (see "Scary Guy," December 15).
- This was always meant to fail
Maine House of Representatives candidate Peter P. Misluk Jr. of Searsmont has a dark secret ... he’s a Democrat.
- It won’t be soon before long
What Strimling is doing in delaying his entry into the race may be on the high end of coy and the low end of ethical, but it’s dead center on traditional.
