The third contributor is Providence-based dancer/choreographer Nikki Carrara, who is creating a dance titled Hive, along with visual artist Katie Wynne and accordionist Paul Dube. The quarry at Ballard Park suggested several structural themes, including breaking stones into smaller pieces; building something large, like a hive, from something small; large hollow tubes; and little saucers with gems in them.
“The dance will evolve from the dancers’ responses to the movement issues I give them,” noted Carrara, “and it will most likely involve picking up objects and re-distributing them.”
Dube, meanwhile, has been working on traditional waltzes to create a sound that fills the circular space.
“The waltzes give a communal feeling that everything’s okay,” Carrara said, “kind of like bees, who are happiest when they’re the busiest.”
In addition to the three aforementioned sites, Anne Zuerner will lead a small cadre of dancers in spontaneous “Phantom Limb” performances in downtown Newport. On Saturday at 6 pm, there will be a Sunset Salsa dance open to anyone on Bowen’s Wharf. So go explore Newport and contemporary dance, all in one fell swoop.
