"Our audiences are very sophisticated," Maitland says. "We're very lucky to have an intellectual crowd that comes through here. They ask questions. The response and feedback we've been getting for the shows that we've been doing have been awesome."
Removing his theater director hat and assuming his role as executive director of the Courthouse Center for the Arts, Maitland likes to stress that the former Washington County Courthouse is one of the few full-service art centers in the state. It presents film, dance, classical music, and education programs, including outreach as far off as inner-city Providence schools. When the Great Performances series at the University of Rhode Island was eliminated in a budget squeeze, it came to the Courthouse Center. World-class pianist Thomas Pandolfi, for example, is performing on March 8.
"There is so much more that we offer here," Maitland says. "The whole realm of the arts is under this roof."
