Restless energy creates a unique vibe

NATURAL PERFORMANCES: Perhaps it's because they have nothing to doTwo teenage boys have their Sunday ritual of video games and pizza disrupted in this ambling, low-key comedy from Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke. First the power goes out, then the cute 16-year-old girl next door asks to borrow their oven, then the pizza guy won’t leave until he gets paid, even if he’s a few seconds late with his delivery. Eimbcke coaxes natural performances from his teenage actors, with none of the cuteness infecting young Hollywood. Maybe that’s because they’re not given a whole lot to do: nothing much happens, and most of the film takes place within the apartment, so there’s a feeling of cooped-up restless energy. Ninety minutes can be a long time with so little going on, and some scenes seem to last forever, but Eimbcke sneaks in some small revelations. It may not be revolutionary cinema, but it has a genial vibe that’s its own reward.
