Review: Motherhood

Fails to carry to term

Being a mother can be stressful. What with the cooking, the cleaning, and getting the kids here and there, there’s a lot to juggle. Eliza Welsh (Uma Thurman) faces additional challenges: her husband and their two children live in two cramped studio apartments across from each other in a New York City walk-up.

For storage, they use their antiquated Volvo. Nonetheless, for her sixth birthday, daughter Clara (Daisy Tahan) has high expectations.

Much goes awry in this day-in-a-life mom-edy directed by REM videographer Katherine Dieckmann: Eliza puts any sympathy you might feel to the test by whining about her stalled writing career, and her bad-luck story neither rings true nor gets laughs. Minnie Driver adds pizzazz as a single mother who pleasures herself with bathtub toys, but otherwise Motherhood never comes to term.
