Notes on the Rock and Art Auction

Drop a 10-spot, walk into the Opera House this Wednesday at 7:30 pm, and you’ll find almost the entire line-up of headliners that played Bank of America Pavilion last summer. Not the actual musicians, mind you, but four-by-four-foot representations of the artists on canvass — folks like Ringo Starr, Elvis Costello, Mary J. Blige, and Bonnie Raitt. It’s not all portraiture. Ashlee Simpson’s depiction doesn’t feature her mug; it’s a pretty-in-pink creation with lots of hearts sprinkled about. And if someone didn’t tell you the paintings of Sigur Rós and the Strokes were of Sigur Rós and the Strokes, you might not know. There are 50 in all, done by 24 local artists, and they’re up in the grand lobby of the Opera House for Live Nation’s ROCK & ART AUCTION, a silent auction (bidding starts at between $200 and $500) to benefit Action for Boston Community Development and Artists for Humanity. LLOYD COLE released a sleeper of an album — somber, spare, smart — earlier this year called Antidepressant, and tomorrow night, November 3, he starts his US tour at the Paradise. If you’re of a certain age, you remember him from Lloyd Cole & the Commotions (“Rattlesnakes”). But the Commotions are no more, and Cole no longer resides in England. In fact, he’s one of ours, living out in Easthampton. Cole — on vocals, guitar, and computer — will be joined by former Commotions guitarist Neil Clark.
