It's still summer

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX STAFF  |  August 25, 2009

Maestro MARK CUTLER & THE TINY STRING BAND provide free sounds THURSDAY (the 27th) at Nick-a-Nee's on South Street, call 401.861.7290 for details. Or, cross the bridge and catch THE LOW ANTHEM open for Surprise Me Mr. Davis (the Slip's side project) at the Narrows in Fall River, call 508.324.1926 or hit ncfta.org for tickets. A busy FRIDAY (the 28th) includes an early-bird show downstairs at Club Hell with THE DEAR HUNTER along with special-guest locals IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES, KISS KISS, and THE DANGER ROOM (reportedly playing their final show). Then head upstairs to Jerky's (401.621.2244) for headliners MASTAMINDZ, with horrorcore Provy rapper Q-STRANGE, JON CONNOR, and ILLSON of Delaware. GAMBLIN' HANDS continue to hone their sound through their live show, and are well worth the trip to EG to catch the trio at the Greenwich Hotel (no cover, 401.884.4200). Get your $7 worth at AS220 on SATURDAY (the 29th) when Chicago's ARMA brings the prog-rock with locals INFINITE CHILDREN, GLOWKID, and the mighty brother-sister duo VULGARRITY (401.831.9327). And the Blackstone hosts an end-of-summer cookout jam with ska legends THE AGENTS and THE STRESS (401.726.2181). The dynamic, month-long EVERYTHING PARTY at Firehouse 13 wraps up on SUNDAY (the 30th) with live sets from THE [VIENNAGRAM:], THE BOSTON TYPEWRITER ORCHESTRA, and the video-infused madness of SENSITIVE HEARTS (formerly Awesome Brothers) and more. Art installations, a costume contest, a fashion show, ice cream, you name it — FH13 is the place to be (401.270.1801). An all-ages/all-local indie rock bill shakes up AS220 on MONDAY (the 31st), with ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS, SCARLET, LAST ONE STANDING, and North Smithfield collective BIG TALL BUILDINGS, touring behind their excellent debut release Abandon Me Now. Admission is $6 at the door.
