Leggo my ego!

By ADAM REILLY  |  July 30, 2008

We’ve heard that; we’ve heard the pejorative “arrogant” before. When I say “we” I mean those of us who are “others” in America; people of color. Minorities. Women. We hear the word all the time from a select section of privileged white guys. . . . “Those people . . . How dare they think they can work jobs like ours or live in neighborhoods like ours or send their children to school with ours? Those people are just so damn arrogant.”

To be clear, I’m certain that neither Klein nor Vennochi had any desire to trigger this association. In the case of McCain and Rove and Krauthammer, I’m not so sure. But in this particular case, intention doesn’t matter all that much. If the press keeps pursuing this particular argument with its recent uncritical zeal, the outcome of November’s election could be decided, in large part, by a nasty bit of media-sponsored, subliminal racism.

So, should Obama’s (alleged) arrogance be off-limits? Of course not. Before covering it, though, the media would do well to think the issue through a bit more carefully — and to be sure the egotism in question exists in his mind, not just ours.

Re: Leggo my ego!
I couldn't agree with you more --in fact,  I agree with you practically word for word as evidenced in my comment in DK's MediaNation blog yesterday morning.  Actually, it's more like you agreed with me practically word for word.  But the message is all. GrubStreet NM

Re: Leggo my ego!
i think the junior senator from illinois' colleagues in the state legislature would agree with the notion of his ego, as would some of his cohort at harvard, yet what politico is egoless? the problem with senator obama is his lack of a substantive track record. achivements for him are really marginal. he remains a risk, and let's hope, 'yes we can', may evolve into, 'do no harm'.

Re: Leggo my ego!
GrubStreet, I'm glad the article resonates with your own thoughts. Just so you know, this piece was wrapped up well before you posted at Media Nation.

Re: Leggo my ego!
Full disclosure obligates me to state that this article was recommended to me by Frank Reilly, Adam's father, in the context of a conversation we were having about Obama's candidacy. I found Adam's article perceptive and very revealing. That said, I was unaware that the "narcissistic liberal" has a history within conservative criticism as a theme or perhaps a smear. Very enlightening: same old, same old. I feel better already. Thank you, Adam.
