Woyzeck at Pell Chafee Performance Center

Pell Chafee Performance Center

Georg Büchner never finished Woyzeck, the famed play he began writing in 1836. Maybe that's why its interpreters have enjoyed such leeway with the tale. Illegitimate children, rapes and stabbings, psychological breakdowns - the pressures of poverty bear some horrifying fruit in this German classic. The Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs present the piece, and offer their own spin. Director Christopher Windom has designed the experimental text as "the story of an African-American soldier stationed in a small Midwestern town post-World War II. Woyzeck, devoted to the Army and haunted by his otherness within his community, finds himself reacting violently to being betrayed by all the people - and value systems - he holds dear." Windom sees it as a cautionary tale: "Is a man responsible for his actions - or is a man a product of the community that he is living in?" The show is at the Pell Chafee Performance Center, 87 Empire Street, Providence, on December 11, 12, 14, 17, and 18 at 7:30 pm, on December 12 and 13 at 2 pm, and on December 19 at 5 pm | $10 | 401.351.4242 | trinityrep.com
