BOSTON RED SOX AGREE TO TERMS WITH LEFTHANDED PITCHER HIDEKI OKAJIMA ON MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with free agent lefthanded pitcher Hideki Okajima on a two-year contract for 2007 and 2008 with an option for the 2009 season.

Okajima, 30, has been one of the top setup relievers in Nippon Professional Baseball for the last several years. In 2006, he was 2-2 with a career best 2.14 ERA and four saves in 55 appearances with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters.

Okajima was traded to the Fighters in March 2006 after 11 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants. He became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2006 season. The lefthander has a career record of 34-32 with a 3.36 ERA and 41 saves in 439 games with Yomiuri (1995-2005) and Nippon Ham (2006).

Very nice. I hear the guy can pitch a little, too.

Hot Stove Cool Music tix on sale

It's that time of year again. Time to get to know the new pitching coach, time to wonder who's gonna close if it's not Papelbon and it's not Foulke, time to get excited about the re-signing of utility players, time to wonder who the hell is gonna play left field and bat cleanup, time to get psyched for the winter meetings, and -- soon -- time to rock out at the Paradise with Peter Gammons, Theo Epstein, and a bunch of beery Red Sox players.

Yep, tickets go on sale tomorrow for the seventh annual Hot Stove, Cool Music concert at the Paradise Rock Club on Sunday, January 7 and this one boasts what might just be the best lineup yet. In addtion to full-fledged rock star Gammons -- fully recovered, thank god -- and HSCM stalwarts Epstein, Bill Janovitz, and Kay Hanley, this years show will feature member of Little Feat, Joe Pernice (of Pernice Brothers and "¡Pega Luna, Manny!" renown), and way super awesome garage-punk stompers the Downbeat 5.

Tickets are $40 and are available from noon Thursday via the Paradise Web site. Doors open at 7 p.m. and things get started at  8 p.m. It's 21-plus. Get 'em quick: last year’s show sold out in less than 48 hours.
