All-Time Best Band: The Beach Boys
All-Time Best Solo Artist: Dr. Dre
Best New Band: Health

There were many ingredients to the Beach Boys’ success: mind-blowing five-part harmonies; mind-bending studio wizardry; mind-controlling Svengali psychologists (that would be Dr. Eugene Landy). But at its heart, the formula for creating the quintessential California sound was quite simple: have five blond white guys lay Chuck Berry riffs over lyrics about surfboards. Voila! | Speaking of dubious doctors, while his medical honorific seems of questionable origin, Dr. Dre was largely responsible for being gangsta rap’s stork, first delivering N.W.A, then Snoop Dogg, Death Row Records, and finally Eminem. | LA’s HEALTH makes spooky, kitchen-sink electronica for the ADHD set. The challenging, mainly instrumental noise pop careens wildly from teeth-rattling feedback to kooky tribal percussion, with nods to German art rock. It’s kinda like Kraftwerk, only propelled by mad, messy humanity.

Van Halen??? You've got to be joking...no way! The Beach Boys did something different. No doubt Van Halen was a good band but what did they do differently

Re: California
On reflection, this is probably a good call.  The Beach Boys undoubtably touched more of the worlds population, crossing the boundaries of gender and age while having a significant influence on major artists ie. Beatles, Elton John etc. than any other band from California or perhaps the US. They also produced an impressive body of work that spanned many years utilizing new techniques and technology.  In their songs and arrangements you can hear the broad range of their influences from barber shop, roots rock (Chuck Berry), surf (indiginous to the California lifestyle) and classical.  They played all the major venues around the world including the White House.  Also, for those who feel gossip is an important part of the package, although the Beach Boys presented themselves with a clean cut image they had their share of offstage drama including the drug related death of Dennis Wilson (the good looking young drummer), and 'free love' encounters at the singers Love Foundation in Santa Barbara. The Doors, Grateful Dead, Van Halen would be runners up in my opinion.

Re: California
The Beach Boys were like half a century ago people and they didnt influence any of the musicians that are from California now. What about the Red Hot Chili Peppers or No Doubt? 2 Pac? The Offspring? Snoop Dogg? Motley Crue? Ratt? Fergie? Buckcherry? Linkin Park? Maroon 5? Gary Allan? Augustana? Sara Bareilles? Donavon Frankenreiter? Colbie Caillat? Ben Harper? Lifehouse? AFI? POD? Audioslave? Avenged Sevenfold? Five For Fighting? Metallica? Pussycat Dolls? Social Distortion? Toad the Wet Sprocket? Eighteen Visions? Oh Hell - even RuPaul was better than the Beach Boys. One point to make clear tribal - the Beach Boys haven't influenced any musicians in Cali they have been trying to distance themselves from that crap.
