Rhode Island

 Deer Tick

All-Time Best Band: Talking Heads
All-Time Best Solo Artist: Tanya Donelly
Best New Band: Deer Tick

Rhode Island is a tiny little state with freakishly high concentrations of a) Brown-educated landscapers and b) aggressively innovative rock bands: think Lightning Bolt, Six-Finger Satellite, Les Savy Fav, and Daughters. While it’s popular to blame RISD for RI’s long lineage of black sheep, it’s much classier to thank TALKING HEADS, whose inspired and inspiring career in elevating art-rock kicked off in Providence (and delivered listeners to another one entirely). | Newport native TANYA DONELLY has been a creative force for years: lending snaky chord progressions to Throwing Muses, enhancing the arid sensuality of early Breeders, detonating her pop payload as Belly, and continuing now as a solo artist. We haven’t heard much from her lately, which is odd considering what green-movement jackpot could be sustainably hit with a few cleverly placed snippets of “Feed the Tree.” Come on, Tanya — let’s get rich! | Lately, we heart DEER TICK’s War Elephant. Their salty, country-damaged rock just has a way of, you know, burrowing into your skin and feeding on your blood.

Re: Rhode Island
Sorry, The Heads would get pwn3d by Six Finger Satellite.  Or Lightning Bolt.  Or Landed.

Re: Rhode Island
You must work at the steel yard or Julians & probably hang out at E&O or some other cool dive bar....just sayin...& I love 6 Finger Satelite & Lightning Bolt. I'm not yet cool enough though to know who Landed is. I think it's about time to put on my gutter punk/anarchist costume & infiltrate the West Side. I'll start by dumpster diving @ Olga's & bring some moldy bread towards the West as a peace offering. OOH yeah...I also gotta get a bicycle.....maybe outta the dumpster also?...SHIT!!!.....skin tight pants too!!!

The Talking Heads!!??  Who is selling the crack that the researchers snort that get the results for this poll. Now you will all probably laugh, but did they forget about the Cowsills?? I know, you are all saying who the hell are they. They sang the theme song for the musical Hair and the song from the film Dumb and Dumber..The Trees the Park and Everything(which the title is not mentioned in the song). Not sure what other songs they had, but they were a pretty popular band at one time. I am not saying they are better than the Heads, but no one even mentioned them...nice bit of research!!

Re: Rhode Island
I am not up on current performers, but there are a couple of mentions in the "all-time" category. First of all, the Cowsills not only had the couple of records mentioned, they were the inspiration for, and originally intended to star in, The Partridge Family. Secondly, Rockapella as they were originally constituted, started out at Brown University, and were far more than the house band for Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego - just check out their recordings, even the first, Primer.

Come on, now...Tanya over Kristin Hersh?? Tanya can't touch Kristin. I like Tanya and all...but she's just not nearly as talented.
