The theater was built in 1925 and restored to its original architectural style a few years ago. Its six screens play second-run commercial and foreign films. Tickets $7, $5 for seniors and for children under 12 (before 6 pm), $6.50 for students (Mon through Thurs, except holidays). All weekday matinee tickets $5 before 6 pm.

COOLIDGE CORNER THEATRE

This theater, built in 1933, is one of the few remaining independent cinemas in the area. Coolidge Corner specializes in art-house premieres, animation, independent features, retrospectives, cult favorites (Sat at midnight), and programs by local filmmakers. Tickets $9.75, $6.75 for seniors and children 12 and under (Mon through Thurs, otherwise $7.75). $7.75 for all matinees before 4 pm.

This Landmark Theatres outlet runs a mix of independent film, foreign language cinema, and Hollywood favorites. Tickets $9, $7 for seniors and children 12 and under. Student tickets are $7.25 Mon through Thurs only. Bargain matinees are $7 for all shows before 6 pm Mon through Fri and for the first show of the day on Sat, Sun, and holidays.

A long-standing strip-mall institution recently recalled to life. Tickets $9.25, $6.25 for seniors and children, with daily matinee tickets $6.25 for all shows before 6 pm. Specializes in first-run Hollywood films and blockbusters.

It's safe to say that even the mayor of Boston has his celluloid favorites. Thanks to his Office of Special Events, you might catch some of your own favorites on Mon nights at various outdoor spots throughout the city. Check online for this summer's schedule, which was unavailable at press time. Shows begin at dusk. Bring your own mosquitoes.

The Mugar Omni Theater presents larger-than-life images on a five-story IMAX Dome screen and is currently showing The Alps (through Sept 1), Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk (through Sept 8), and Wild Ocean (opens Aug 1). Omni films run for about 50 minutes. Call or check online for film times. Tickets for Omni, Laser, and Digital 3-D shows are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for children ages 3 through 11.

A modern multiplex theater in the Landmark Center, a renovated former Sears headquarters and retail store. The two largest screens, 62 and 56 feet wide, are known as the "Screen Monsters" because of the theater's proximity to Fenway Park. Shows first-run Hollywood fare.

Located near the Davis Square T stop, the Somerville Theatre is one of the last of the big-screen movie houses, showing first-rate, second-run foreign, art, and Hollywood films. The closest thing left to a drive-in movie around here, and no one has to hide in the trunk to get in. People of all ages flock to the banks of the Charles River with their own chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy these movies under the stars. On Fri from June 20 through Aug 29, films begin at sunset, or around 8 pm. Call for movie information each week. Free.

Cape Cod’s only drive-in theater and one of the last drive-ins in the US. Box office opens at 7 pm. Shows start as soon as it’s dark enough (usually about 8 pm, with the following show starting around 10 pm). Tickets $8, $5 for seniors and children four through 11.
