Perhaps you saw it too. The Eclectic Collective’s gig flyer late this past year featuring a prominent, blue lion-looking thing with tusks and horns. The creature, which graced Allston’s utility polls, managed to confuse us so thoroughly that we later found ourselves confirming via Google Images that lions didn’t, in fact, possess tusks and horns (not our proudest moment). The artist responsible, Boston-based illustrator Elizabeth Siegel, a/k/a TOFUSQUIRREL, specializes in creating fictional fuzzy beasts and googly-eyed insects. Some of her other creations include Peanutbutterflies, Bunny Squirrels, and the Horse Gremlin. She often gives these creatures human features — painted toenails, unibrows, etc. — so that it is hard to decide whether what you’re looking at is cute or creepy. Our favorite piece is one posted on her Web site — a “missing” poster for the “pygmy GooGoo bird.” We didn’t see it hanging anywhere around town. But we like to think it did.
