Healey announcement, Cliffs Notes version

Just got back from Kerry Healey's campaign kickoff, and I have to say, it was a very effective bit of political theater.

I'll have the full text up later this afternoon. Until then, some highlights:

  • Ron Bersani--whose granddaughter Melanie Powell was killed by a drunk driver, and later gave her name to the anti-drunk-driving legislation known as Melanie's Bill--introduced Healey after praising her to the skies. To state the obvious, the Legislature's mishandling of this issue was a real boon for Healey.
  • John Bell, the mayor of Gloucester and a Democrat, spoke just before Bersani. My prediction: he'll be the first in a long line of Democratic municipal leaders to publicly back Healey.
  • Healey pressed all the right buttons in her speech. She explicitly warned that that the Democrats will run amok if they control the governor's office as well as the House and Senate. She took credit for derailing legislation that would have allowed the kids of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at state schools. She called for the income tax to be cut to 5 percent, per the Massachusetts electorate's instructions. And best of all, she played up her humble roots in a highly convincing manner.
I've always thought that Healey tends to get short shrift, and her announcement today only reinforced that conviction. (Sco of .08 Acres offers his more skeptical take on the LG here.) Lefties love to poke fun at Healey, and she's provided plenty of fodder. But whichever Democrat lands the nomination needs to take her seriously.

Forgive me if I ask the obvious, but why does Bell back Healey? Why do you expect plenty more local leaders to?

Has anyone seen the photo up on Boston.com? Healey with only white men in dark suits standing behind her...nOt a single woman or person of color. Adam, please disabuse me of the notion that this is representative of the broader audience in attendance.

Well, there were a whole lot of white people there. But the gender balance looked pretty equal. I did see a handful of Asian Americans, and one or two African Americans. That said, I think we can assume Healey won't be seizing the "Rainbow Coalition" mantle.

“Is This Near Here?”
Now that Lt. Governor Healey is running for the corner office, it is time to tell a story of how out of touch she is with our Commonwealth’s rural towns. Since 2003 we’ve been told over and over that “Sherry” as Mitt lovingly called his running mate during the 2002 gubernatorial race, has been such a great liaison to cities and towns. Just not rural burgs.
The only time Kerry Healey “visits” rural communities is when she streaks through their borders on the Mass Pike or Route 2 on her way to a photo-op or ribbon cutting somewhere else. Anyway, in January 2005, our lt. governor was in Pittsfield speaking to a Berkshire Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Crowne Plaza. Upon concluding her remarks, the chamber hosts presented her with a framed print of the famous Round Stone Barn at Hancock Shaker Village. The barn is a historic landmark visible from the intersection of Routes 20 and 41 on the Pittsfield-Hancock line, and images of it have appeared on many of the publications published by the state’s Office of Travel & Tourism over the years. But Kerry Healey it seems is clueless about the town of Hancock. After promising her audience that she would hang the print in her State House digs, Healey returned to her seat at the table with the Berkshire County legislative delegation. Holding the picture and pointing to the barn, Healey asked the local legislators “Is this near here?”
