Abolish the SPDB!

Brian McGrory makes a pretty good case in today's Globe.

Some years are better than others. Let the TV market decide. No one has to watch.

It's kind of like the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. One of the rare chances to see our electeds get together live with opportunity for unscripted moments. Has to be better than the debates that get so orchestrated nothing gets discussed.

They just need one guy, or gal, who can stand there and be spontaneous. It's not easy but it is not rocket science.

I do disagree with McGrory about Hart. I think he comes across as the guy who doesn't wantr to be there but has to and is gracious about it.
Just seems genuine.
And everyone else looks like an idiot.

He can elected state wide - minor position- because of this. Perhaps.

McGrory is nostalgic for the Bulger-Silbert-Weld days? Now that's funny.

McGrory hit the nail on the head with today's column. The breakfast had its moments but Menino is getting tired. It used to be to that they would really work on this event and try to create funny things. It was worth watching every year. But the last two years have been pretty bad. He really summed it up here:

"Maybe the real problem is that the breakfast simply mirrors what Massachusetts politics has become, with an absentee governor, a collection of underwhelming candidates striving for his job, a powerless congressional delegation, a lapdog City Council, and a longstanding mayor grasping for new ideas."

That article was so rediculous. McGrory is just mad because his buddy Tom Reilly absolutely stinks at it.

People love this event. Sure not everyone, but a large number of people in Massachusetts treat it like a Massachusetts political superbowl.

What are the ratings for the show? I bet they destroy the other local political shows on Sunday mornings.

If you don't like the breakfast, thats ok too.

The last two have been somnolent. Perhaps the decision to not celebrate St. Pat's on March 17th has something to do with dulling any edge, or wit.

After having watched it for 20 years, many times in person it has run its course. Bulger made it a success. Its become so stupid I could only handle it for an hour or so. I understand the humor only got worse.Reilly was really the only smart one and decided to leave early and attend the St. Patrick parade in Holyoke.

Hey don't end the breakfast. It is not our party.
No one said it has to be televised, and no one said we have to watch it.

It is a South Boston breakfast. Not a Boston or a Massachusetts breakfast.
If I was from Southie I would say, in good ole Souhtie Fashion, "F.U.! Now you are telling me we shouldn't continue with 'our' breakfast because non-Southie people don't want it. How elitist."

Well said Ernie.
Keep the breakfast, it's a Boston tradition. So is bitching about it.
Don't like it: Don't watch it. Believe me, if there wasn't an audience, WB56 wouldn't bother to mount it every year.

Bill Bulger might have sung it this way:

"For the strangers came and tried to teach us their ways
They scorned us just for being what we are
But they might as well go chasing after moonbeams
Or light a penny candle from a star."
