The L word

In the current issue of Bay Windows, Laura Kiritsy argues that Green-Rainbow gov. candidate Grace Ross--who's a lesbian--is missing a precious opportunity to highlight gay and lesbian issues.

With Ross becoming a kind of underground political folk hero, and Debate #2 of the governor's race just a few hours away, Laura's piece is well worth reading.

I forgave Grace for not coming out in the first debate, but in this second debate she was handed a gay question and instead of using her own life as an example spoke in vague terms. As a queer person I say shame on you Grace!

Wow... I didn't even know that about Grace Ross... and I'm a freaking political junkie (granted, I'm not a fan of the Green Party and therefore pay it little attention).

It's so sad that Grace Ross has tied herself around the Green Party... she would otherwise have been a very credible candidate with fresh ideas. And, as a gay person, I certainly would like to be able to vote for some qualified gay candidates (still would have chosen Deval in this case, even if Ross was a Democrat, but I certainly would have chosen her for a position like LG or future election).

To Mark, while i didn't see that debate (was working), I have to question your accusation. Grace didn't "come out" in the first debate? Grace has been out since the start of her campaign! Manyfo her profiles describe her as a lesbian, and her first big chunk of publicity was in Bay Windows. Surely you're not saying that she's closeted herself! How has she failed to come out? Don't you think that perhaps she's highlighted issues of poverty because those are also important--and far more absent from the debate?
