Talking Politics - New Exclusive: Mitt Romney's MLK Jr. Claim

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

When I first heard Mitt Romney's claim, I was very surprised -- stunned really. Despite living in Michigan during the period in question (and being active in Democratic politics), I had no recollection of George Romney actually marching with the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was considered by many a moderate, "Rockefeller-Republican" and therefore one might assume he was sympathetic to the goals of the civil rights movement. However, I do not recall a level of public advocacy on his part when it counted -- before the Democrats passed legislation and/or the Mormon church changed its position on African-Americans.
Thank you for digging into this.
