Talking Politics - Patrick's big mistake

Patrick's big mistake

Deval Patrick really, really, really shouldn't have asked Tom Reilly and Chris Gabrieli to think out loud about how (allegedly) nasty they've been to him over the last few days. He came out of that exchange looking like a delicate prima donna.

Allow me to say something nice about Tom Reilly: the heart of his reply--"What do you think is going to happen when the Republicans have a shot at you? This is tame. We're being really nice"--was devastating.

If Patrick loses on September 19, it'll be because of this colossal blunder.

That's a stretch. If he had said something personally damaging to himself, you could say that. But he didn't. Plus, there was no real soundbite.

I agree, the question was a mistake, but it won't cost him the election and it didn't even really cost him the debate. However, if the media wants to run with it like that then I guess they could do their best to cost him the election for him.

I'm actually kinda disappointed in this blog... it's waaay too much like a typical pundit. I could dial in on James Carvel if I wanted that =p

Adam,

I couldn't agree more that Patrick got his nose bloodied, and a lot of that was because he set the other two up.

The two best lines of the night (Reilly saying “no one is picking on you, Deval,” which made Patrick look whiny and small; and Gabrieli saying “people in glass mansions shouldn’t throw stones,” which, again, made Patrick look whiny and small) may have been prepared, but they were expertly delivered. Moreover, they WOULDN’T have been delivered if Patrick hadn’t put the ball on the tee for the other two by asking them to ruminate on how horrible they've been to him. Just a strange, curious, BAD decision on the part of Patrick and his handlers.

Still, I'm not sure that it will cost Patrick the primary. Actually, I think he'll hold on. That said, Patrick's uncharacteristic misstep last night did him no favors.

Yeah, it was a mistake. But it wasn't that bad. "Colossal blunder" = Reilly last week. "Significant miscalculation" = Patrick on negativity last night.

Deval's big mistake is trying to put the lie to his progressive credentials. In one night he comes out in favor of the MCAS as graduation requirement, charter schools and attacks the nurses. This just behind opposing (in essence) livable wage laws in his response to the United Airlines issue. Great progressive. Gabs is looking better all the time. Particularly with Healy taking shots at Gabrieli.

So you're going to vote based on what Kerry Healey thinks? No wonder Democrats lose almost every time.

Gabrieli does look good right now. In fact, really good. Killer Coke, Ameriquest, attacking nurses - jeesh, no living wage, MCAs, squabbling with the union ... "For it all" Deval doesn't look so progressive now, does he?
