Talking Politics - Democratic convention: Encomiums for Patrick

Democratic convention: Encomiums for Patrick

Phil Johnston's introducing Deval Patrick--or, more accurately, two other people (state senator Marian Walsh and Taunton mayor Bob Nunes) who'll introduce Patrick. Johnston says Patrick's speech earlier today was reminiscent of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, that he was "deeply inspired," and that "we need to be inspired in this country."

Nunes says Patrick is leading "one of the most dynamic political movements that we've seen in Massachusetts."

Marian Walsh calls Patrick "the Democratic who's truly independent, and the Democrat who can win and transform Massachusetts." (She also says he's "the individual who best personifies the American dream.")

Surprise! Chris Gabrieli just showed up after getting all kinds of shit from the press for not letting everyone know about his 15 percent announcement a few minutes ago. Is it a coincidence that Gabrieli--who'd left the building, and decided to come back--showed up RIGHT BEFORE PATRICK'S SPEECH?

Anyway, here's Patrick. He tells his supporters they "did a historic thing by giving me your trust and your confidence." He's also warning them he'll make mistakes (?), and admitting that he's a flawed human being (?!?), and telling them, "Don't give up on me, because I will never give up on you." (Quoth the astute eighth-grader hanging around with her dad [not me] in the press room: "Nice cliche there.")

Now we're getting the no-politics-as-usual spiel--nothing new, but something Patrick does fairly effectively.

Now Patrick's building up his supporters--"You think for yourself," etc.--and running through his litany of big challenges facing Massachusetts, and doing his inspirational-candidate thing ("You are as hungry as I am for candor and leadership...Not just a strategy to win but a strategy to govern. And let's build that strategy on hope.")

Chris Gabrieli's still talking to reporters outside the press room. Um, Chris--could you have waited ten minutes, maybe?

Quick observation: sometimes Patrick carries the We're-all-in-this-together stuff a bit too far. E.g.: "If you go to work on the ground, at the grassroots, then I win. And if I win, so do you. Because if I win, the business executive wins--but so does the guy who runs the lathe in the machine shop." And so on.

Gabrieli finally piped down, but Patrick's still talking about "visionary leadership," and stuff like that.

Now he's talking about Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocketeering! (?) Apparently, Goddard did some of his work in a small cabbage field not far from Worcester. And now he's wrapping things up. Strange way to end, methinks.

I don't know what's worse--Patrick's platitudes, or the cheerleaders who think he's bigger than Jesus...

Yeah.
Now what?
Post-ops:
Money, money everywhere? - doubt it. Too much to lose. Gabs entry only adds to the money that will be spent and doesn't force the others (Tommy $4.2m Reilly and Deval they-don't-give-multi-million-dollar-mortgages-to-poor-folk Patrick). Remember what everyone was worried about a few months ago - who can compete with TR's $4.2M?
Well what does another $5m from Lewisburg Sq. matter?

Spliiiit? Two progressives might split the difference, hand it to Reilly. Maybe, but doubtful. Reilly isn't offering a safe harbor for any D other than those looking for or looking to keep a job. Interesting Republican two-bits - "I'm most afraid of Reilly...he's too liberal for this state!" With friends like the Republicans what "independent leader" needs Trav and Guy?

Gabrieli - money, brains, results. So why does he want to be Guv? He's doing more now than he could ever accomplish trying to figure out what next year's budget conference committee is going to keep on his wish list. Hey Guv, maybe we could put stem cell research in outside section #182, how's dat? Can he lead?
Patrick - question heard most often in my senate district delegate section while the pizza slices disappeared and the MDP tried to find another abacus to complete the vote count - if he wins in November will he beat Sen. Obama to the White House? Then again, he's already been an Exec at Coke and friends, so why be prez?
Reilly - ummm, basis for candidacy - nice guy, lives in second floor of double-decker, hates wind in the sound, not keen on 5.3% (but very creative in spending it) and wants all sex-offenders to do 25 years. Maybe in the wrong party.
And his speech today wasn't bad so long as we controlled for its post-Patrick presence on the schedule (who wants to speak after Patrick?!?) and ignored that fact that a couple months ago he was unbeatable. Clearly today's big winner?

The MDP - ummmmmmmmmm. I hear that computers are being used to enhance the difficulties encountered with counting? And tabulating?
Maybe use those screens with the waving flags as information disseminators?
How about a band?
Or maybe replaying the 2004 World Series?
Then again it was only a few hours....

I can tell you lOVe Gabrieli and hate Patrick!
You should stop and look at the Patrick campaign again because I think you are missing the big picture. When Deval talks the room is silent, the demand for Patrick bumper stickers is so high that the printer can not keep, the campaign has run out of t shirts twice and more first time voters are involved in this campaign then any other campaign. There is something different about this candidate, the campaign and the supporters. People believe in government once more!

Poor Deval. What he doesn't understand is that the people who got him the convention endorsement are the very same people who will lose him the nomination in September. If I am wrong, then they will cost him the election in November.

That's me, all right. I HATE Patrick.

JK! Actually, I think Patrick is an impressive human and an attractive candidate--and you'll notice that I hammered Gabrieli for his tacky decision to speak to reporters during Patrick's acceptance speech. That said, when you've heard someone be inspirational enough times, a little cynicism creeps in. (Of course, Patrick might probably class me with the cynicism-pushers...)

Adam, you, as the Phoenix political guy, are expected by the left leaning left to automatically support their flavors of the week. This week is Deval Patrick.

How dare you find some fault in him. How dare you speak of those faults.

Trason! Treason!
