Another Q & A

"Benny" writes:

Any insight on the Walsh senate seat race? Who's going to run, and who's got the best shot?

This all assumes that Marian Walsh gets her judgeship, which certainly seems like a done deal from what I've been told by insiders for some time now. Most people I've talked to agree that there's room for one Boston pol and one Dedham or Norwood pol in the race; city councilor John Tobin's pulling papers to prepare for a run may be a signal to Rep. Michael Rush and councilor Rob Consalvo that he's planning to claim the Boston spot. From outside Boston, I'm hearing a lot about Jerry Kelleher of Norwood; John Rogers is unlikely, but who knows.

I'm hard-pressed to predict this one yet, especially not knowing who else might jump in from Norwood or Dedham. But I do think that Tobin would have a great shot at it -- and I will go out on a limb and predict the winner of the election to replace him on the City Council, should that happen: Matt O'Malley. (Although to be sure, it would be a hotly contested race.)

Who might run from Dedham? What about that Obey guy in Westwood or Bob Joyce? They have both run for that seat before.

First - despite her desire for judgeship, WALSH has NO legal experience. When she worked for the DA she was an administrator (hack) went to law school while working there (probably getting paid full-time while working part-time), and didn't finish till after she left the DA's office. Not the prosecutor everyone assumes she was. And her judcial/public safety credentials from the General Court are slim.

Of course, who ever said you had to be qualified in MA for a judgeship? John Rogers may see the writing on the wall that he can never get enough votes to be speaker or that Sal is leaving no time soon. Former Rep. Maryanne Lewis of Dedham could make a comeback - with her connections in the city from her JP uncle who once held the seat. Won't happen? Think of Sue Tucker. Lost her rep seat, waited a few years and presto. Consalvo represents much more of the Senate district already than Tobin does and his godfather Menino could order his WR minions to back him. Rush is a lightweight, no money and no base.

Looks like we were both wrong, David. For my final question, do you think this will be the final word on the subject? What about the "done deal" you referenced?
