The Patrick Friday-Afternoon News Drop

Seriously, do they just do it now to irk me? Today's buried-to-the-weekend special is an executive order clamping down on state contractors' use of undocumented immigrants. Oh, also, A&F chief Leslie Kirwan gave some reporters (I must have missed the call) an on-the-record briefing about the budget. Questions about either story can be directed to Washington DC, where the Governor will be hanging out for the next few days with his gubernatorial peers.

Yeah David...The Governor really owes all of you in the Media the opporunity to make your jobs easier and more enjoyable...just like you all have done for him over the last couple of weeks!!

Didn't see you give him kudos when he annouced Tax loopholes/relief and admitted he "screwed up" mid week..

Don't worry we still read you on the weekends!!!

It's not what he owes me or any other journalist -- it's what he owes the public, which is an opportunity to understand and discuss new policies, personnel, data, or events.

The Friday-afternoon news dump is a well-known tactic to bury news and reports: it's hardest to get analysts, experts, or opposition party members for comment, and Saturday editions are the least-read newspapers of the week.

I don't know that the Patrick administration is doing it intentionally, but they have been doing it repeatedly, and I think it's fair to call them on it.

But don't you think it's so refreshing to see a "news dump" (I doubt it was intended that way) where the news item wasn't buried because it was damaging to the politician? In fact it was rather the opposite.

Think about it: illegal immigration is a hot-button issue that Patrick was "on the wrong side of" according to conventional wisdom. This latest news appeals to that CW, and most policians would have trumpeted it to the high heavens in order to get the political capital out of it. But Patrick doesn't work that way (like how he didn't make political hay out of the death of that poor little girl who was overdosed like everyone else did).

I think to a large extent, Patrick isn't doing anything like a standard pol, and the media doesn't know how to cope with that.

Of course, us bloggers have been telling them how (actually start having comprehensive coverage of policy for once), but you know, we're like, not real journalists so we don't count.

I'm waiting to see the time management studies that the Governor had done that prove that while the State Police do not have time to detain illegal immigrants, they DO have time to drive his new Caddy to DC to meet him when he hops off the plane....

Is there any truth to the rumor that Gov Patrick's Caddy is out-fitted with bullet proof windows and that is why he needed it in DC? This extra protection would justify the cost of the vehicle and the need for it in DC
