Risky business

New in this week's Phoenix: a look at Deval Patrick's business background and how it could help or hurt him in the governor's race. At this point, I'm not sure which it's going to be.

If it hurts, it will hurt because labor groups decide not to turn out for Patrick in the general. I don't think it will hurt him in the primary, unless maybe Chris Gabrieli jumps in, because the types of people who are turned off by Patrick's corporate experiences are also likely to be turned off by Tom Reilly's distancing himself from progressive issue stances. If those people stay home, it hurts Patrick less than if they come out and vote for Reilly.

Should he make it to the general election, I have a feeling that Patrick's work at the DOJ may be the more controversial part of his resume.
