Talking Politics - Romney's Got the Mo!

Romney's Got the Mo!

Momentum, that is. At least, if you believe the latest ARG poll, which shows Romney suddenly scoring a mighty 24% among likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters. That's good enough for a solid second-place showing, leaving Giuliani eating his dust. ARG also has Romney climbing to 14% in Iowa, which is pretty impressive at this point.

Was the 1st Q fundraising really worth that big a bump, or was it something else?

For the Dems, ARG shows Hillary slipping in Iowa and Obama slipping badly in NH (14%???). But the big news is in Iowa, where two of the second-tier candidates escaped the margin of error for the first time: Biden at 6%, Richardson at 5%, MOE +/- 4%. Watch out, here they come!

So much mo that he can admit his favorite book was written by the founder of Scientology...or maybe he thought people would accept Mormons more easily if he could remind them of even zanier religions.

Two things immediately come to my mind:

1. If Romney is surging, it means that image, money, and packaging can really trump substance; and

2. Looking at some of the ARG numbers, it seems to me that there's going to be a fight to pull independents/undeclared into the primaries: Edwards needs to pull them into the Dem. primary, and I'd guess on the other side, McCain needs to pull them into the Rep. primary to beat Romney.

Of course, Edwards and McCain's big problem is that MOST states are not like Mass., and do not HAVE open primaries where people can parachute in and stick you with a candidate.

Romney vs. Clinton. And As I've said before, he is the only candidate who has experience running against a...CHALLANGING...woman, and beating her like a gentleman.
